Our Learning

 

At Tarras School we foster a love of learning. Tamariki want to learn and are excited to do so! We work with purpose, using our time to secure the basic skills (reading, writing and maths) and explore other learning connected to our localised curriculum. We strive to set tamariki up for future success.

We follow a Structured Literacy approach, using evidence based practices to support tamariki with their literacy. In maths we use materials and manipulatives to secure knowledge until mastery. We practise waiata for our Kapa Haka performances, cook produce from our gardens, put on a production every year, delve in Science, refine our skiing and swimming skills and engage in other aspects of the curriculum that meet the interests of all learners and follow our Enviroschools journey.  We connect with other small schools through various sporting opportunities like Cross Country and with our local schools in Wānaka for other events to build friendships.

We use current Neuroscience and PB4L Best Practice to inform our approach to managing any behaviours.  We teach self-regulation skills through the Zones of Regulation programme and maintain a calm, but consistent approach when dealing with any complex behaviours. We foster a positive and supportive culture where our learners develop and uphold Kanorau, Manira, Hapori and Whakauka (Diversity, Curiosity, Community and Sustainability). This is achieved through consistent school-wide strategies and partnerships with whānau.
